Julie B Booth: First Letters

Here are the first four letters of my Peace Alphabet.

I'm using bird forms to symbolize Peace. In most cases, the birds will be doing something active and in many of the letter vignettes will contain a peace sign.

These are all hand printed on hand painted fabric. I've stitched details with one strand of DMC floss using running, back and satin stitches...teeny tiny stitches!

The final format will either be peace flags or a peace banner.

  1. This is very well thought out. love the dove letters. It must have taken ages to create the blocks for printing. It will be interesting to see the following prints and how you embellish them.

    1. Thanks Sandy. In reality, the tiny stitched details are what really took the time (my fingers are aching a bit!).

  3. This is what is so wonderful about doing the block printing! You can re-use and try all kinds of colors and surfaces. I really like you have going on here!

    1. Thanks, Gemma. I had fun designing the letters and cutting the blocks. I think it will continue to be an interesting challenge figuring out how each letter can be turned into a bird form.

  5. A wonderful way of 'writing' Peace! You've put so much work and dedication into it that it becomes eloquent and with a multi-layered meaning. Rich!

    1. Thanks, Ersi. I'm enjoying the challenge but I'm also realizing that the second alphabet is going to have to be a lot simpler!

  6. I loved the doves as a print - but the 'wow; factor of the stitching brings them to life so much! This is dedication to peace for sure...

    1. Thank you, Fiona. It IS a meditation! I am happy to have my Ott lamp and my magnifying glass. It's always a surprise when I pull the pieces out from the glass to really appreciate the tininess of it all. I am looking forward to figuring out what they will all become...either many peace flags or one peace banner.
