This has been a trial to get to this point but finally my first challenge for the year has been put to bed. The forthcoming international day of peace was the inspiration to finish it NOW. I have not hooked up the light to it yet but it will be my shining light on the big day. I will see if I can be creative now for my 2nd set of letters as time is fading. But hey I am happy we have rain.

Learning with my new printer/scanner.  I now have a large scanner bed, but it took a while to figure out how to scan larger stuff. Here are the two sides of my book pages, before they are folded into the meandering book.

Fun in the Sun letters

When I finished the first lot of letters about peace at the end of June, I hadn't been thinking ahead to what I would do for the second set. I gave myself some time to think about it, and then realised as the summer went on that I was getting more and more behind! But I had several other deadlines to focus on.

Then I thought I might use the type of letter I made for one of those other works. So, I have been thinking it through in my head and finally today I got round to doing something about it!

So, here are the first 10 letters for July and for August. I wanted a bit more of a happy feel to them than the last ones. More like a fun sunny day.

At this point it is one layer of fabric with the letter cut out and fused to a second contrast layer. I still think I might stitch round them with the machine - possibly as part of the presentation or possibly as the next step with a further presentation to complete. But for now here are these letters at this stage.

a-e for July

f-j for August

And now to focus on the presentation for the peace letters which has also been queuing in my head behind other things!

Letters and Signatures

I’ve finished August’s letters ...

cut the pages (the noise - represented by different weights of text going in different directions across the pages, so that it isn’t easy readable) ...

and folded the signatures for the structure.

Alphabets [An interesting discovery / Une découverte intéressante]

Hi everyone,

today, when I just see for my new Alphabet, I discovered an interesting web-site, with the alphabet and language of the world (and invented alphabets). May be, you can get something!

I am finally posting my completed Peace alphaabet.  I did keep working away at it in the first half of the year and finished the individual letters before the end of June, but never got them posted.

I contemplated several different ways of presentation and finally decided on a meandering book because the road to peace is never a straight line.  The base for the book is a 12 inch by 12 inch piece of cardstock.  I mounted the individual letters on cardstock to match the colour of the ink (rainbow letters) and to make a clearer distinction between the blue, indigo and purple inks.  The colour of the inks vary with the amount put down.  Some of the letters are a bit messy as I managed to touch to ink before it was dry. The hazards of working in a circle.  I plan on redoing these in the future, but for now it is better to have them done :-)

I scanned the page that makes up the book flat, but I have a new printer/scanner and I have not yet figured how to scan it as a jpeg rather than a pdf.  More learning to be done!

I have an idea for my next alphabet, but have not yet started. A three week driving holiday to the IAMPETH convention, family visiting from Australia and a nephew's wedding  have kept me busy.

Second Alphabet - Callie -

Bonjour,

I continue to work the second alphabet letter A week ... But we must face the fact that this script will be very irregular ... ;)
Bah... Il faut juste travailler... ;)
There I worked the "L" and "T", which have the advantage of being vertical ... but I struggled with the transverse and oblique ... Bah ... It should just work ... ;)

bientôt plus tard pour les suivantes...
Bonne journée
See you later for the following ...
good day

Second alphabet - Callie

Bonjour,
Hello,

Here are two more letters of the second alphabet. I'll be irregular because it's a bit long to work. Furthermore I do not work the letters in alphabetical order, but by grouping those with similar paths (waves, straight lines, circles ...) to work longer the same gestures rather than going through the same motions in all directions ..
 ..

Je vous souhaite une bonne journée.
Have a good day.

Jac's Peace Alphabet

I’ve been thinking about the second alphabet. This will be the peace alphabet.

I’m working on the idea of intervals of peace/silence interspersed between all the noise and chatter of daily life. I’ve had an idea for the structure and how to represent the noise.

I decided I wanted the letters to feel quite delicate, almost ephemeral. So, after much experimentation/messing around, I’ve chosen to use handmade (but not by me) paper, iridescent ink and organza ribbons.

I’ll stick these into the structure later when I’ve finished it

Second alphabet of Calligraphytique / Second alphabet de Calligraphytique

This text is translate in english and in french.
The english translate is not write by a dictionnary but by me, so I can write with a lot of faults. I am sorry for that, but I am French.... I hope you still understand my text. If you can't, write a comment!

Hello everyone,
after finish my first alphabet, I make a break, but I am already here! I don't finish my first alphabet because I need buy some material, but i will do it.
For my second alphabet (I don't begin it...), I have somes ideas and I propose to explain it here.
I just think about my first alphabet, and I found that is not very simple to found my reasoning. So I will try to improve this point.

I asked myself what represents the peace in the world. For me, the peace depends of the countries, that is my first idea, use the different language and alphabet for my letters. Then the peace is a something who is hard to find, that requieres a fight, too often violent, be it for what is called "inner peace", finally that is accept imself, or for the peace among countries. All this made me think about taht happened in the world, news as we love say.... Well, news, this is the relation of North Korea and other countries, the revolution into Africa, but that is also the fight of so many people (and peoples!) for survive, not even to live... As a result, my second idea is taht my calligraphy is a kind of "fight", of revolt, provocation between the differents elements, ... Finally, who is the peace make me think about Nelson Mandela, after all my ideas! Nelson Mandela, former president of South Africa (the history subject of the  2013 french examen in Economy and Social), of the Rainbow Nation. I thing to that because I studied the South Africa and saw reportages about this countrie. Then, for the calligraphy, the notion of Rainbow enjoyed me. That is my last idea, the colours, the vivacity of rainbow, his mystery, his sciences and his treasure!

Thereby, my second alphabet will be a multi-alphabets / multi language, a violent fight, a tribute to all poeple who fight, and it will be with vivacity, colours and hope!
Remains to ..... as they say!

Good day to you!

Lyndell - 2nd Alphabet for 2013

My second alphabet started well!  Hopefully this will continue but life has a way of getting involved and messing with my plans.  I have thought of several different ideas for the final presentation.  None of the ideas are exactly what I want.  Still I have a little bit of time yet.

Second alphabet - Callie -

Bonjour,
Hello,

I finally started my second alphabet ... A few months ago I had this idea, but I think the fear of difficulty was a bit "slow" ... Finally, I got into it, but I think with the number of hours needed to write this letter, I will take time to finish the whole alphabet ... ;)

I wanted to work the letters and gift I think regularity needed "a letter a week" will allow me to progress gradually ...

I have not yet realized that the "A" ... but ... the main thing is to work ... ;)

Bonne journée

Eithnas Peace Book

Here is my finished Peace Book...........at last! Once again I enjoyed making it so much and I am happy to have another book to add to my collection. This time I tried a different method to assemble the book. It is an attempt at stitching the spine together. I find I will look up the instructions on how to do something but half way through I'll just start to improvise, I think I'm not good with "how to instructions" in general. After I started I realize that my book paper could have been a better quality, but I am restricted to what my local craft shop has to offer. Must make a note to self to stock up on quality paper when next I visit a big city.

P.S. When I finished the letters for this book I  made some collages from the extra letters I had done. I love when work generates or inspires new/more work. You can see what I did over at littlebitofblue.

Noela's finished alphabet no.1, 2013

At last - the fabric hanging alphabet is finished.
I hand stitched patches of dyed silk to the backs of the letters and added a lovely highlight of red kimono silk to the back of the letter 'o'.

I ended up with 4 'drop lengths' of letters, then bound the bottom edges and added satay sticks to the top edges for strength and hanging fixtures.
Next I found, cut to size and drilled a lovely piece of word worm eaten driftwood to match the wabi sabi nature of the letters.
The four drops were stitched through the holes in the wood and fixed on the top with tiny buttons, then loose cords were bound into a hanging cord.

Every stage of this alphabet posed a logistical challenge, but I like the result...definitely 'me'.

Lyndell's Neuland Watercolour Alphabet

Second half of the year and my next alphabet.  This time a Neuland alphabet done with walnut ink and coloured with watercolour pencils.
I didn't start with the traditional ABC so here's hoping that I remember to do them (at least the A &C).  I rather like them for the pretty colours that can be achieved with watercolour pencils.
