Second Alphabet - Callie

Voici quatre autres lettres qui me rapprochent tout doucement de la fin de l'alphabet... ;)
Les lettres arrondies sont un peu plus difficiles parce que l'arrondi doit être régulier... En même temps, les tracés droits sont difficiles parce qu'elles doivent être parfaitement droites... ;)

Here are four other letters that bring me gently from the end of the alphabet ... ;)

The rounded letters are a little more difficult because the flare must be regular ... At the same time, the plots rights are difficult because they must be perfectly straight ...

I didn't forget

My second alphabet, the Peace alpha, has been challenging.  After seeing all the great ideas of how people interpreted it, I was stuck trying to come up with my own version, uninfluenced by what I'd seen.

This time I started backwards and figured out the display format first.  I've been wanting to try a flag book forever, so I settled on that for my format.  Then, what to put on the pages????  How to depict peace - overwhelmed by the global scope of the idea.  So I brought it back to a more personal level:  words and colors that bring me peace, that help me feel calm and peaceful.

I'm incorporating my photography by choosing images and closeups that feel peaceful to me and the lettering will be all in shades of blue/green which are the most peaceful colors.  I have all my flag pages done and the patterns for the letters, but the letters aren't all cut out yet.....  here's a hint of what I'm thinking....



Each page will have a word speaking to the idea or feeling of peace. I'm excited to pull this all together by the end of the year.

BTW, congrats to Fiona for successfully navigating the challenges of getting a show organized to showcase this excellent ongoing project!

It's been a long time since I have not written on this blog.
I finished my first aphabet long but I can not find a provision that forbid e to expose in full, and I tried to spend time for nothing ...
I started my second alphabet with the iris folding technique, I show you the first 8 letters, I'm late ...
Fiona thank you for the photos of the exhibition.
She must be very beautiful by the variety of alphabets and the artistic talents of everyone!

Cela fait bien longtemps que je n'ai pas écrit sur ce blog.
j'ai terminé mon premier aphabet depuis longtemps mais je n'arrive pas à trouver une disposition qui e plaise pour l'exposer en entier, j'ai essayé et passer du temps pour rien...
J'ai démarré mon deuxième alphabet avec la technique du iris folding, je vous montre les 8 premières lettres,je suis déjà en retard...

Elle devait être très belle par toute la variété des alphabets et les talents artistiques de chacun !

Apologies, explanations and options...

As the co-ordinator of A Letter a week I am feeling particualry bad that I haven't managed to undertake my second alphabet for the year. And this week, I just decided to forgive myself and let it go, and say it just didn't happen. So I apologise for letting the side down.

As an explanation, I have been rather busy (as many of us are I know) and one thing that has been taking an inordinate amount of time since February has been the pulling together of the A Letter a Week - artistic journeys through the alphabet exhibition - at the Butter Factory Arts Centre in Cooroy.

Since the beginning of ALAW I have hoped and dreamed it might be possible to pull together some of the works for an exhibition.  This exhibition opportunity appeared, and I sought a collection of finished pieces from 2010, 2011 and 2012.

In the end we had 63 works by 29 artists from 6 countries in the exhibition, which was pretty representative of ALAW contributions over the first few years.

It was very special to see the works in person, and in some instances hold them.

So apart from my other bibs and bobs I was focused on ALAW quite a lot; just not doing it!

And thirdly, here are the options…

I have set up a blog for next year, in the hope that some folk might want to continue, or some new folk might want to join in.  The exhibition has brought a lot of new interest so that could be interesting!

I will continue to pursue exhibition opportunities. The works on display have been so well received, people really enjoy seeing the creativity people have applied to the alphabet.

Voici les lettres que j'ai travaillées pendant les vacances... heureusement qu'il y a parfois des vacances... ;)

Here are the letters I worked during the holidays ... Fortunately there is sometimes a holiday ... ;)









J'ai eu beaucoup de mal avec les droites du X, j'ai du tracer beaucoup de lignes au crayon pour m'aider... mais bon... une fois qu'elles sont gommées...  On ne les voit plus... ;)))

I struggled with the right of X, I can draw a lot of pencil lines to help me ... but ... once they have been erased ... We no longer see ... ;)))

The second alphabet

At the beginning of this year I was feeling particularly rudderless, not knowing where I was going, nor why.  I am someone who likes to have a structure, and work from almost daily to do lists, so when I came across the A Letter A Week challenge I thought that this might be of help to me.  
On the one hand it has been a complete failure: I discovered very quickly that when my ideas come I either need to work on them right away, or they need however much time necessary to simmer on my back burner.  On the other hand, the challenge has been successful in giving my mind a new direction to think about, and my quickly made rough draft Peace alphabet led directly to the resolution of a problem I had given myself elsewhere.

 

Meantime it was bothering my conscience that I had agreed to produce two alphabets.  It was bad enough that I had not stuck to one letter per week, but to duck out of the second alphabet gave me tinges of guilt.  Then it came to me - but this is definitely not how I should have started!
In the last year of looking after my mother I had made all sorts of little bits and pieces to keep myself occupied, and two of these were double sided constructs which I vaguely thought might make a cloth book.  It was not thought through, and I made them more or less on automatic pilot.  The snaps below are of each side of the same one construct.

When I first started learning about drypoint printmaking I took the same Thinking motif, and made potential double page spreads for this/these potential book/s.

I made several prints on different kinds of paper, including tissues red and black, and on fine Japanese mulberry paper.  And I thought no more about them until my guilt about the second alphabet and the back burner in my mind fired off a connection.  I think it was going back to Edinburgh recently that did it - reminiscing about everywhere I'd been in my life.  That was it!  I could make the pages into an alphabet memoir, with each letter being the initial letter of somewhere important to me in some way.  After all, I had lived in Zimbabwe for over five months, so Z at least was covered!
As I say, this is certainly not where I would have started if I'd wanted to make such a book from scratch - but this is where I find myself.  I have made a maquette, and sorted out the layout, and now I have to play about with the letters and the words.  It needs a bit more back burner time now - but I'll get there, even if it is not completed in 2013.

I would like to thank ALAW for the opportunity, which I have misused, and thank you all for the profit I have gained from the experience.

Peace letters presentation for Barbed Wire Flags

I finally finished the presentation part of the Peace Alphabet - Flags with barbed wire stitching.

On Sunday we had a special day to remember people who are attacked and beaten, have houses and churches destroyed, and are imprisoned or killed because they are Christians. This happens in a surprising number of countries around the world. The banner was just right hanging on the wall at church.

As I said before,
These are flags for the top 26 countries on the World Watch List -

making people aware of human rights violations

against those with Christian beliefs.

Seeking peace for all in these countries.

I wanted to make them more effective from a distance. I decided on a phrase that would fit with letters centred between the flag letters. The Phrase Prayer for the Persecuted worked very well. Besides being useful for seeing from a distance, it really helps the flags from twisting around on the ribbon. So it is a lot easier for folding up to store. I think without it, it would be a nightmare to untangle it every time you wanted to use it.

I am really glad for the challenge here about Peace. I learned a lot in the process of making the letters.

My next lot of letters.  Better late than never!
I have had a lot of fun with these letters.  It is quite meditative working on them.  The colours are very soothing and gentle.
I have started to think of the presentation and I may have come up with a solution.  I hope so. I always find that the presentation is the most difficult part but the meeting the challenge is also part of the enjoyment.

Eithna 2nd Alphabet

At last I have made a start on my 2nd alphabet. I had many ideas but no work and lots of excuses. But this week my stars must be aligned or perhaps it is the combination of stormy weather that I can't be bothered to brave the elements, or that I'm still buzzing after my sumi-e course in Westdean, as well as our t.v. is broken so all that means I'm catching up with my "to do" list and the A.L.A.W. was at the very top 

I cut pages from my sketch book (maybe a hint of desperation here) to see what random images would appear. I rubber stamped the letters with red ink to duplicate the stamp used in Japanese ink painting and so my 2nd alphabet began.
